Welcome to my island where prehistory is just one step away and spirits still keep a watchful eye on the places they love and the people who inhabit them.

Dear Cora... DEAR CORA...
Country Store
Available now

Living on a remote island ranch (no phone, no radio, no TV -- her closest neighbor is 85 miles away), she met readers' demand for a second edition. Thousands of readers "met" Cora Holmes and her family through the pages of Cora's first book, the the best-selling Goodbye, Boise...Hello, Alaska.

In the years since Cora's first book came out, the Country Store office has been Flooded questions, comments and pleas to publish another book by our favorite Alaskan pioneer and her family.

"Whatever happened to your lamb, Peep-Sheep?", subscribers asked. Or, "How did Chernofski get its name?" Or, "Are you and Milt ever going to retire?" And -- the question received most often -- "When is Cora going to write another book?"

The answer is: She did. And it's now off the press.

"Dear Cora..." is filled to the brim with Cora's trademark passion, honesty and good-natured humor. Best of all, she answers many of the most frequently asked questions in the same endearing way she wrote Goodbye, Boise...Hello, Alaska. So you'll be able to catch up on what's been going on in Cora's life lately.

For example, when asked if she and Milt are ever going to retire, Cora replies: "No matter how hard life is here, we love it and have no plans to leave our ranch. We can't imagine another place in the world as relaxing.

When asked if she misses going to the mall or eating fast food, Cora replies, "If we wait long enough, the sea will bring us whatever we want. Milt and the boys soon discovered the 1,200 miles of coastline contained everything a shopping mall did...except a checkout counter. As for pizza, we enjoy it often!" (She proves her point by providing an easy-to-make recipe for pizza -- one of several recipes of hers she shares with readers in this new edition.)

"Dear Cora..." is like her first book -- warm, fascinating, personal and poignant. You'll find you just can't put her new book down -- especially if you were one of the many folks who loved her first one. Best of all, this 180-page book includes hundreds of color photos from Cora's personal albums!

REVIEWS

"I purchased four sets of your books and every person I gave them to loved them. My cancer stricken sister-in-law said they really took her mind beyond her sick bed. You are truly my Eleanor Roosevelt. She was my ideal for all the work she did-so did you, Miss Cora. Thank you for coming into my life." Kay Espinosa, Yucaipa, California

"I just finished reading your books and I must say I could not put them down. The adventure, love, daily/seasonal routines, the ups and downs of raising your children on a remote island is a mind bending thing." Pat Fessler, Crownsville, Maryland

"Please excuse my use of "Cora" rather than Mrs. Holmes. After reading your books I feel as though we are all family. You probably get more mail like this than you care to receive but after reading those in the book, I decided to join the crowd and tell you of my experiences in regard to Dutch Harbor and Unalaska…." Don Taylor, California

"I just finished your delightful book! I was attracted to it by your interest in self-sufficiency and your spirit of adventure…" Bobbie Steinke, Martin, Tennessee

"I just had the immense pleasure of finishing your two books! I am only disappointed I don't have a third to start reading…" Collette Hand, Palmer, Alaska

"I like to keep in touch with you at least once a year. We have all your correspondence placed safely with your books, which Milton and I have read and reread…" Martha and Milton Headings, Archbold, Ohio

"I have just had the pleasure of staying at Chernofski Ranch foro a few weeks.. I'm a fish and Wildlife Service biologist and was assisting in a bird mortality study in response to the Selendang Ayu oil spill. While at the ranch I read your book…I found all of it fascinating. Pat Walsh, Dillingham, Alaska

I subscribe to Yankee is where I first learned about you and I sent away for your books. I was so touched by your story and what a dramatic turn of events led you to Alaska. I read that book many times and often toughed to tears by both of them…" Mary Snowbird Mzurecky, San Juan Capistrano, California
